Simon's suggestion.....

Hi everyone,

In the last post, Simon suggested a website where you can do a survey and find out where you land on the 'political compass'. (I think he's mentioned this in class as well.) I've done it and I think it's quite interesting! It might be even more interesting if we all tried it - there would be lots to talk about! If you do it, either share results here or bring them to class this week. Click the link button below to get started.....

Here are my results:
Economic Left/Right: -3.38
Social Libertarian/Authoritarian: -6.15

I'm curious about the rest of you...
try it!

Not amusingly, I stand right in the middle on the economic scale, and -3.45 on the social scale. After doing the test, I think some of my answers could not be taken literally, or else the world will be in a turmoil. e.g. Not making classroom attendence compulsory.

mine were:
economic left/right: -4.13
social libertarian/authoritarian: 0.00

It was a really 'deep' test! I really had to think about some of them....I didn't really agree or disagree..It would depend on the actual situation...Cool though!

Simon....you now have company in the Right Authoritarian quadrant of the Political Compass!! Would you be surprised to hear that it's Shane??
Some of the Wed. group have added their scores to the chart - you can check it out next week.

There were a few problems with the site again today accessing page 3 - if you do it at home, you can post results here and we'll add them to the chart. You might even get your parents to try it. Predict what you think they'll score, then check it out. Have some good discussion.....

To general s......
I think Shane is, however, he'll have to confirm that himself. It's on the grid so I'll check tomorrow at school. When I first showed Shane the survey and the grid, he predicted that he would end up way up in the top right corner!! He didn't quite make it that far, but you and he are certainly 'neighbours'. I told him you'd be really happy to have company!
I got my 15 yr. old son to do it tonight and he is also left libertarian...not surprisingly.
It's fascinating, isn't it?? Thanks for sharing....

Anyway, I have to say Little Moque on the Prarie is one o the few TV shows that I watch! Hilarious. An interesting mix of paradizing Praie life, Muslim tradition, and Muslim Pregidest. It's awesome!

I have to say the best lien was fro mte fill-in religous leader (I forget the title he was filling in for and his name...)

Yeah, I thought so... so what's up with my result? Something's got to be wrong with this the way this test was made. I not sure how they based the questions, so I don't think I'll ever know why I got said result. Hmpf. At least I know what I truly am, regardless of my result from computerized data.

Uh...maybe your result is more accurate then what you think? I mean...I thought I was a bit more of a socialist, but I'm kind of more in the middle!

I personnaly read a neat readout that showed all the political party's views. Cosidering that I did not agree with much of anything that either liberal parties had, I think that it does not compute for me to be an authoritarian. Do you? Or is my logic psychologically discombobulated at an impasse? (I've always want to form sentences like that....)

Anyway, I also don't think that if you do not agree with your results that you should live with it. If you don't want to be what it says, don't.

Perhaps I am rambling on about irrelevancies and cluttering the boards. Heck, exams for me are tomorrow. That could be why.

I agree that this test has many bugs (or features). I personally do not agree with my results at all. I would think that I'm more of a liberal, yet I'm a Bloc Quebecois according to the quiz.

I suppose this poll itself is an example of the political world- not everyone has the same views on politics, and this polls was obviously somewhat biased, becasue that is how they see each wing They probably tried very hard not to be, but that is quite an undertaking.

Just because of your results that doesn't show your party that you have to vote. It just roughly places you onu a grid that shows your approximate area. Just because you are left wing does not mean you cannot vote Conservative.

Jan 25, 2007, 4:14:00 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

You could. But if you were left wing, why would you? It's just that I think of being plcaed on a compass as a demonstration of morality. So if you are to vote conservatice (small-c,) why would you have a liberal mindset? I see this as being simply a matter of logic.

What if they take a stand on an issue that you agree with. But the other parties disagree there. Who would you vote then?

Left wings usually are in favour of freedom of choice but they favour more government involvment in taxes and the economy. They are in favour of equality and the enviroment and favour not as strict punishments on laws. They are in favour of rehabilitation and strict regulations on business. THey are in favour of free speech and not as much millitary funding.

Liberal Party of Canada is the centre party in Canada. They might be a little right leaning bu Liberal is a term to describe a left wing thinker. It is almost the same as Socialist but socialist is more left wing. Not that confusing.

Cool! I know I'm not a socialist but still favour freedom and environment and also not so much for punishment. Teach criminals the right things...don't punish them for life! (unless they were like a serial murderer or somone like Saddam Hussein!)
I'm a feminist to an extent. I Would definetly NOT consider mysef as a person who's extremely feminist...I'm average...kind of...maube a bit above average...my religious beleifs influence everything.

What I mean is more of a sense of morality. When I look at some of the liberal parties' (being the Liberals and the NDP) views on hot political topics I cannot at all agree with them. Certain things like being in favor of things I consider immoral the highest priorty before economics, the envioronment, and legalistics. As I see it, if your social morals are in alignment, the rest would logically follow. I don't think that this graph demographically takes such into account. It would be nice if it would.

the way you answer the determines what you get. in that way the graph tells the truth. but there could have been some questions you didn't understand that really affected the score. if you don't agree with your result, just take the test again.
